Sri Guru Granth Sahib contains the recitations of 6 Sikh Gurus and also the recitations of following enlightened personalities: 15 Bhagts, 11 Bhatts and 3 Sikhs/Venerators of Sikh Gurus.

The 3 Sikhs are Baba Sunder Ji, Satta and Balwand. But there is a variation in opinion amongst Sikhs for this Category. Some believe that recitations of 4 Sikhs/Venerators are included in Sri Guru Granth Sahib. The 4th one they say is Bhai Mardana. To justify their version they quote Slok no. 1 of Pourhi no. 12 of Bihagrhey ki vaar Mehla 4 (Page 553). While compiling Guru Granth sahib (Pothi Sahib), Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib prefixed Mehla 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 with SHABDS to denote BANI recited by the Particular Guru Sahib. Had Guru Arjan Dev Sahib not written Mehlaas with SHABDS, it would have been difficult to know which BANI is recited by which Guru. In the Slok under consideration Mehla 1 is written in the beginning of the Slok and in the last line of the Slok Name Nanak appears as the author of this Slok. All the 6 Sikh Gurus have used Name Nanak as author of their BANI SHABDS. Mehla no. only denotes the Author Guru. It is therefore evident that Guru Nanak Dev Sahib is the author of the sloka under consideration. Bhai Mardana can never use Name‘Nanak’ as author in any of his recitation. Similarly the 2 Sloks following Slok no. 1 is BAANI of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Sahib. These 3 Sloks are addressed to Bhai Mardana. It is quite clear that none of the recitations of Bhai Mardana are included in Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Hence Sri Guru Granth Sahib contains recitation of only 3 Sikhs/venerators of Sikh Gurus.

Theme of all the 3 Sloks is same. Consumption of liquor, wine, intoxicants and alcoholism ruins the consumer. It is generally seen that person becomes more lustful, less sensible after consuming intoxicants and sometimes is provoked for committing heinous acts. GURBANI’s Sermon is to shun liquor, wine and intoxicants.

Punjab is a land where Guru Nanak and his successors were born. They revived humanity and composed Sri Guru Granth Sahib to guide human beings to lead purposeful, neat, clean life and to work for uplifting of humanity. Phir Uthi Aakhir Ik Sada Touheed Ki Punjab Se, Hind Ko Ik Mard-e-Kaamil Ne Jagaya Khwab Se. (Mohd Ikbal’s Poem on Guru Nanak ).

sada=voice, ਆਵਾਜ਼। touheed=monism,Unitarianism, ਅਦ੍ਵੈਤਤਾ। mard-e-kaamil=Thorough Guru Nanak,ਨ੍ਯੂਨਤਾ ਰਹਿਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ।

It is painful that Punjab’s youth is being ruined by consuming narcotics, alcoholic drinks and drugs. Who is responsible for this destruction? The Government as well the society is responsible for this ruinous. The Government does not want to ban liquor as its sale provides large amount of revenue for the Government. What a tragedy, the Government wants to earn at the cost of people’s health. There have been dry states in India. The Governments of those states have been managing their states effectively. I was posted at Trichy, Tamilnadu during my service career from July, 1963 to December, 1970. Tamilnadu was a dry state then and was being managed effectively. Why Punjab Government cannot ban liquor sale and manage the state efficiently? Where there is a will there is a way. It appears health of people is not given the due importance which it needs. On the other hand there is no proper guidance to youngsters to impress that consumption of narcotics ruins one’s life. We have to invoke the sense that liquor is injurious for health. Drug trafficking is another evil which is promoting drug consumption. Mostly, youngsters are the prey of drug traffickers. Drug addiction is youth ruinous in Punjab. It is often in the news that some Police Personnel’s as well as some Ministers are involved in drug trafficking. If this is true, suitable corrective measures are required to be adopted for mending the Governing system. As far as we Sikhs are concerned, we have to preach door to door and instill that GURBANI forbids intoxicants. Consumption of alcoholic drinks, narcotics and intoxicants is prohibited in Sikhism. Christians usually adopt door to door preaching method. In most of the cases a group of Christian Women go door to door for preaching Christianity. We also have to impress upon Sikh Women that they have an important role to play for maintaining Sikhism. Women are more susceptible than men. When the women of some religion become atheist; downfall begins. Hence for keeping the structure of Sikh religion intact, devoted and accomplished Sikh Women shoud go door to door to Sikh Houses to instill Sikhism. Sikh Men Folks should extend assistance in this regard. Devoted and accomplished Sikh men and women together should work for maintaining Sikhism in high spirits.
